The Three Little Pig-Lets...

Mummy got to know many mummies on the Singapore Motherhood forum for Nov 2007 babies and got very good support on babies' stuff. There are 2 other babies born on the same day as me - 15 November 2007. So the 3 mummies decide to call us the "Three Little Pigs" (now still piglets since we are still so small)... Here we are on show...

Big Brother, Kiros... His mummy says his name has an African origin and means King... He's born at 0011 Hours...

Second Brother, Garreth. Born at 1602 Hours. We had the same gynae, Dr Chan and were both delivered at Gleanagles Hospital. Hmmm, we might have been neighbours in the babies' room. Haha...

So that made me the youngest as I was born at 1901 Hours, after a 15 hours struggle in Mummy's stomach, trying to come out to see the world fast with my face facing front, but end up getting stuck in that position...

Mummy's 1st Day Back at Work

It was Mummy's first day back at work yesterday. To prepare for the day, she woke up at 630am to express her milk and then woke me up to feed me at 7am. She managed to slot in 30 minutes to play with me after that, since I am usually in the best of moods at that time in the morning after all the sleep and feeding and change of diapers.

Mummy had a busy day at work, with a few meetings, which outlined the projects she needed to work on, going forward. She missed her "expressing of milk" session by 2 hours as she was stuck in a meeting. And when she finally does, she realised on her way home that she had not screwed the VIA lid on tightly and more than 50% of the milk has spilled. Mummy was so upset...

As it was my 1st day spending so much time without Mummy with me, she decided that she should come home early to at least spend a little time with me before my bedtime at 8 plus. However, I was in a cranky mood. Mummy wonders whether it is because I missed her or cos I am too tired. Mummy's sad that she now can't spend as much time with me as she is back to work. I am sad too...

Mummy's Thoughts

Whilst I spend the last few days with Matthias before I need to go back to work next Monday, many thoughts filled my mind. The 3 months and 1 week that have passed since his birth seems to be a period of mixed feelings. He had been rather difficult for the first 1.5 months. Wailing when hungry and hard to put to sleep at nights. Needing a lot of attention to carry him around. But he has very much improved over the last few weeks (although at times, there are still some wailing and difficulty) and now I really enjoy time spent with him even though you can really be very tied up by him the whole day.

He has learnt to smile and giggle some time ago. And now his every little smile and giggle melts my heart. He seems to be able to understand when I tease him “ 笑笑” and use my finger to tickle his cheeks. He always gets very amused with that and he will break out into a smile or a giggle. I like to take photographs for him as it helps me remember his growing phase. Now he seems to like be photographed as much as I like to take for him. When I bring out my camera and say “ 笑笑”, he will smile at the camera.

Now he is really very talkative and always wants people to "talk" to him. He makes baby noises, and he is really excited when you repeat after him as if you are learning to talk like him. And he gets "motivated" to making more noises and at times, can be very loud. It's as if he is in a competition with you to make the loudest noise.

He likes to stare and look around. When we bring him out now in the baby carrier, he always seem to be exploring things, looking around at the colourful stuff. Once we caught him staring at Fann Wong's abalone advertisement, haha, as if he was interested to eat the abalone. He used to like to stare at picture of boats that was hanging behind the sofa in YJ’s place in Singapore. Now, he stares at our wedding photos that are hung at the top of the bed. In the morning, we also draw up the curtains and let him "sunbathe" as he watches the moving traffic and people rushing to work on Xinzha Road. Today we introduced him to our Ah Yee, the one that comes twice a week to clean up our place. He was staring at her as this is the 1st time he is seeing her. So funny...It is also funny as we bring him out these few days in Shanghai, the China folks seem really interested at this "little person" I am slinging in front of me. They call him "小不点" or "小毛头", as they are often called like this in China.

He has already learnt to lift his head up when we were back in Singapore. But somehow, we seldom see him doing that these few days. Not sure if it is because he is now wearing rompers that covers his feet and he hasn't learnt how to push himself up on those yet. Will monitor further and see how. He seems to prefer "sitting" nowadays as I crop him up with the pillows on Daddy's and Mummy's king size bed. At times, I can even put him on my stomach and he will wobble a bit as he sits on my stomach.

This is Mattthias, trying to sit up, supporting himself with his arm.

One of Matthias's play sessions... Gosh, see all the toys that Evan gor gor in Shanghai has passed to him... Daddy's and Mummy's bed has become little Matthias' playground...

Now Daddy's and Mummy's bed has become little Matthias' bed too...

Now he has very much settled into a routine every day. Thank God that he didn't show any huge reaction of adjusting to the life in Shanghai. Not sure if we can equate that to Gina Ford's routine as I have always heard about the good comments on the book, but never got to try it. But as I compared the timings given by friends who are using that method, I think I have gotten pretty close to it now. Now he goes to bed at 730pm (with me singing “Twinkle twinkle little star, his favourite bedtime lullaby) and sleeps through till 630am in the morning, only taking one feed at 1030pm at night (his dream feed, aka wake him up for feed). We are still trying hard to drag it further to 730am. During the day now, he takes feed every 3 hours and naps about 1 hour for 3 times a day. Hopefully, we can stick by this routine when I go back to work next week. But this also means that we will probably have very little time to spend with him during the weekdays as he would probably have just woken up when we leave for work and he would have gone to sleep by the night we come back. Sigh...

The Big Move Back to Shanghai

It's a BIG move for the Chan family back to Shanghai and Mummy hasn't got time until now to sit down to pen down what happened.

Daddy and Mummy have been really busy these few days, packing for our move back to Shanghai. As they pack their luggage, I realise bulk of their stuff are mine. When we checked in at Changi Airport yesterday, our 2 big luggages came up t0 52kg (almost exceeded the 25kg weight limit for per pax), not to mention we got several hand luggages of my Avent stuff and our winter gear...

Many people came to the Airport to send us off. So whilst everyone was busy carrying me for the last time before I leave, I was preoccupied the whole afternoon. Boy was I tired out! I zonked out even before the flight took off. When the flight was taking off, Mummy was trying to stuff the pacifier I spitted out back into my mouth as Dr Ngiam had said that sucking the pacifier will help me to clear the pressure on my ears. I slept throughout the flight and only woke up once for my evening feed. I was so distracted by the monitor screen showing the geographical location we were at. Mummy just thinks I am being KAPO... Then after that I fell asleep again and did not wake up until I reached our place in Shanghai. This time, when the flight was landing, Mummy just let me sleep and didn't bother about the pacifier. There was a Caucasian baldie "uncle" that sat beside Daddy and chatted to him the entire flight. He commented that I was a "MODEL BABY" as I had been good throughout the entire flight whilst other babies on board were wailing away. Mummy was so proud of me...

It was 3 degrees celsius when we landed in Shanghai, but somehow Daddy said it felt colder than that. Our place in Shanghai is freezing. Whilst Mummy had put on 2 thicker rompers for me and mittens and also wrapped me up in a blanket, I couldn't sleep long by myself in my cot as it was too cold. I kept waking up every other hour. Until Mummy decided that I should sleep between her and Daddy. They left the bathroom light on, to make sure I am ok, checking on me periodically. I finally fell asleep at 4am and slept through till feed time at 8 plus in the morning.

Then, finally time alone with Daddy, whilst Mummy needed to go back to office to get some admin work done. So Daddy played with me whilst I am awake, pat me to sleep, fed me and changed my diapers for the time Mummy was away. Hmmm, he passed the test!!! Haha... Mummy had told Daddy specifically to try to let me sleep less in the day so that she can put me back onto my routine in Singapore with bedtime around 8pm. And I think she kinda succeeded cos I was so tired "exploring" my new home in Shanghai and our short little groceries shopping trip made to Carrefour in the afternoon that I zonked out by 8pm.

I am 3 Months' Old

Mummy bought me a small chocolate cake to celebrate my 3 months' old birthday. But then I didn't get to eat the cake as Mummy says no solid food for me before 6 months to prevent any allergies to food. So Daddy and Mummy finished the cake all by themselves :o(

More photos of me, and also together with Mummy...

Here's more of my milestones reached at 3 months:

  • Recognizes your face and scent
  • Holds head steady
  • Visually tracks moving objects
  • Squeals, gurgles, coos
  • Blows bubbles
  • Recognizes your voice
  • Does mini-pushup
  • Rolls over, from tummy to back (still trying hard, but Mummy realises that I can "kick" myself moving when on my tummy, whether awake or asleep. At times, she finds me doing a 90 degrees turn round the corner blocked by a pillow [Mummy came into the room last night and found me missing from the middle of the bed where she usually lay me to sleep. Guess where I was? I made a 90 degrees turn and is close to falling off the bed head down in the little corner which was not blocked by a pillow. Almost scared Mummy to death. Now she has to block off all parts of the bed] Other times, I stay still but find my head 180 degrees from where I started sleeping)
  • Turns toward loud sounds
  • Can bring hands together, bats at toys

The ones that Mummy didn't like most is that I learnt to blow bubbles with my saliva (it gets messy and wet) and I conveniently start to suck my thumb to pacify myself...

Daddy says I look like I am doing a leopard crawl, preparing for NS.

Matthias' Sleep Routine

I have been hearing a lot of good comments on the Gina Ford's contented little baby's book. A number of mummies I know try this and have an easy time with their babies, as they put their babies to a strict routine and bed time from 7PM to 7AM. However, I have never been able to try this on Matt as family members around us do not believe in leaving the baby to cry it out.

As Matt was born in the evening, I figured from some studies done that they probably get confused with day and night. So for the few weeks after birth, he sleeps in the day and wakes up at night. Although his routine got better, he still sleeps around midnight after his last feed. On top of that, he has to be carried to sleep and it takes 1-2 hours every night and 2-3 tries to put him down to bed to sleep. 2 weeks ago, I tried to cultivate him to sleep after his feed at 10PM and it was good for almost a week. These few days during CNY, he's probably got very tired from all the visiting and demands to sleep at 7PM. It seems that he is so tired that he even chooses to forgo his feed at 7PM. For a good 3 days in a row already, he has gone to sleep at 7PM and until 7AM, only waking up once in the middle of the night for feeding. He also just taken some jabs yesterday, so I am not sure if that is also another factor contributing to his change in sleep routine.

Being a 1st time mummy, this seems pretty worrying. I guess the only thing I can do now is to continue to monitor him for 1-2 more days. Hopefully, it's just a normal change and nothing serious, cos we are leaving back to Shanghai next Monday.

Update @ 15 Feb 2008:
Now come to think of it, for a very long time, when Matt was sleeping the entire afternoon of 4 hours, I refuse to do away with it cos it gave me some time alone for myself. But then, it took me a long time to realise that it took more time away from me at night cos it meant more time is required to put him to sleep. So when I started breaking his nap into 2, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, things got better. Now with that and bedtime at 8PM, things are manageable and it prepares me to get back to work next week.

Visit to the PD 3

Today Mummy and Daddy brought me to see Dr Ngiam. It's time for jabs again (*Sob *Sob). I took 2 jabs today, one in my right thigh and the other in the left. It was so painful that I wailed in pain when Dr Ngiam gave me the 2 jabs. Mummy says I still got one whole list of jabs to take when back in Shanghai. Help help...

Here's an update of my growth at 2 months, 3 weeks and 6 days:

Weight = 6.07kg

Length = 60cm

Head diameter = 41cm

My 全家福

Today, we took a 全家福. From the back row, right to left, that's Mummy and Daddy, then that's Daddy's younger brother, my 叔叔 and his wife, Aunty Penny. On the first row, that's 爷爷 and 奶奶. In their arms are Cousin Zoe and myself...

My First Proper Photo with Mummy

Since birth till now, Mummy has never really taken a "nice" photo with me as she has always been the photographer since Daddy is not around. Now, finally Daddy is back and has taken a nice photo for me and Mummy...

My First Chinese New Year

Today is the 1st day of Chinese New Year for the year of the Rat. My year, the Pig year, is finally over... Mummy bought me a new set of clothes from Fox baby for me to wear during this occasion...Daddy taught me how to say and do "Gong Xi Gong Xi", so that I can wish all the uncles and aunties happy new year and will receive lots of hong baos. This is me with some mandarin oranges and my 1st red packet from Daddy and Mummy...

I am Having a Milk Bath

To keep up with her supply for breast milk for my feeding, Mummy has established a regular schedule to express out her milk. However, now that we are counting down to go back to Shanghai in 2 weeks' time, Mummy figured that there is too much milk stored in the fridge for my consumption for the next 2 weeks. And it is a big hassle to bring them back to Shanghai. So guess what, Mummy decided that I should have a milk bath, so that my skin will be "smooth smooth". This is me taking my milk bath...

My Winter Gear

I had a very good night sleep last night, slept for 12 hours in a row (from 8PM to 8AM this morning) and only woke up for milk in between and going back to sleep immediately. So I was in a good mood this morning and was having my usual morning "playtime" with Mummy and she decided to make me try on my winter gear.

Have I grow bigger now to fit in? I am smiling, so Mummy is thinking whether I like winter as much as she does.
